I had a conversation with a friend/business colleague yesterday and we were discussing the best route for his son to take to get started in Loss Prevention. At my suggestion, his son completed the on line detective training course at http://www.lpdetective.com/. This gave him the basics of the entry level position, loss prevention terminology and should put him ahead of other people applying with no experience or training. He needs to leverage this training in the interview to show the hiring manager he is very interested in the field.
Some larger companies like Target are offering training programs for individuals with a 4 year college degree. This can be an excellent path to get started out of college. Having a solid base of training from a company like Target will assist that person in his career. In my opinion, "feet on the ground" experience can not be ignored. As an entry level manager, he will need to coach/train detectives and experience is invaluable to accomplish this effectively.
Tomorrow I will discuss additional training available to assist that person in moving up in their career.
Enjoy the day...
